Synthesis on Northern Greenhouses and Innovation Perspectives

This report on northern greenhouses explores solutions to strengthen food systems in Quebec's northern territory (TNQ), addressing challenges related to food insecurity, climate change, and geographic isolation. Northern greenhouses play a critical role in enabling local production of fresh fruits and vegetables, thereby reducing dependency on imports and the greenhouse gas emissions associated with food transportation. These infrastructures also serve as spaces for learning, social gathering, and community cohesion, contributing to the health and well-being of local populations.

The document highlights collaborative governance, social entrepreneurship, and management challenges as key factors for sustainability. It emphasizes the importance of integrating Indigenous knowledge, maximizing energy efficiency through technical innovations, and adopting agricultural practices tailored to harsh climates. Technologies such as passive solar greenhouses and heat storage systems are identified as having significant potential to optimize energy performance. Finally, the report underscores the need for greater local community involvement and strategic partnerships to ensure the success of these initiatives.

By incorporating these approaches, northern greenhouses become a pivotal tool for supporting food security and ecological transition in remote regions, while respecting Indigenous self-determination and fostering sustainable, inclusive agriculture.
