Agriclimat: Knowledge Transfer on Climate Change and Its Impacts

Context

The goal of this study is to learn from the Agriclimat project and its knowledge transfer approach, to identify promising avenues and actions for future phases of the project. The lessons learned could also be useful to other strategic sectors and organizations looking to implement climate change mitigation and adaptation measures.

What is the Agriclimat project?

Québec’s agricultural sector is at the epicentre of today’s climate change challenges: On the one hand, farming is directly impacted by climate events and shifts; on the other, it accounts for 10% of the province’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions (Government of Québec, 2022). Agriclimat is one of several initiatives created to help the sector meet its climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. Launched in 2017 by the Québec Agricultural Development Council (CDAQ), the project emphasizes knowledge transfer measures designed to raise awareness and support farmers in adopting climate action strategies for their businesses. This study will provide an overview of those knowledge transfer measures and offer an assessment of Agriclimat’s initiatives.

Project Objectives

The study is being carried out in partnership between the CDAQ and Ouranos. Both organizations have been involved in Agriclimat and now want to reflect on the knowledge transfer approach used so far. The goal is to better understand how knowledge transfer works in practice and what kind of impact it has. This reflection could contribute to improving Phase 3 of the Agriclimat project, while also providing inspiration and practical guidance for other sectors interested in setting up similar initiatives. It will also highlight the key conditions required for implementing a project of this kind.
