Context
In recent years, there’s been a growing interest among the next generation of farmers in fruit production. After a surge of enthusiasm for vegetable farming, it’s now fruit that seems to be gaining ground in the province. Since 2017, CISA has been studying the establishment pathways of aspiring farmers, and its findings show that new fruit farmers face distinct challenges—a reality also noted by faculty at INAB. These challenges fall mainly into three areas: 1) financial viability in the early start-up years; 2) access to and availability of labour; and 3) market development and commercialization.
Project Objective
Carried out in collaboration with the Centre for Expertise and Transfer in Organic and Local Agriculture (Centre d’expertise et de transfert en agriculture biologique et de proximité - CETAB+), this project aims to strengthen and build new knowledge about the challenges faced by the next generation of fruit farms in Québec. This knowledge will provide the foundation for working with partners to co-create a social innovation that directly addresses the priority issues identified by these producers.
